One of Switzerland's best known hotels, the Dolder Grand is housed in a building that is part medieval fortress, part Renaissance chateau, and part 19th-century palace. The cogwheel funicular that connects the hotel to the centre of Zurich is only one of its unusual features. The large lobby is appointed in a predictably grand style, with antique furniture and beautiful rugs on the polished marble floor. Other public areas include the Gobelin salon, with an enormous tapestry. The 163 guestrooms vary somewhat in size, due to the age of the building, but none is small. Rooms in the newer part of the property are decorated in pastel colour schemes and feature conservative modern furnishings, while those in the older wing evoke an older atmosphere, with artefacts from the gilded age of the haute bourgeoisie. Naturally both the rooms and their bathrooms are in exceptional condition. The hotel's fabulous restaurant is decorated in grand style with huge windows running the length of the room and overlooking the golf course.
